I am pleased to welcome Vanessa, from South Tahoe High School who has decided to do her Senior Project at Pamela’s Pilates. She will be learning how to do “Mat Pilates” with Jordyn and myself. As well as learning about owning a business and teaching pilates.

She will be my second student who has chosen Pamela’s Pilates for their “Senior Project.” I am honored to be able to share my passion for pilates and to give back to our great community. (Besides, the fact that these local kids are so adorable, Vanessa is a total joy to work with! ~ Pamela

My experience as a pilates instructor

I have had to study long and hard – much harder than my college days, as a Sociology major, as I have had very difficult exams in anatomy and proper execution of the exercises, to insure each person I work with receives the most professional training.

The Stott / Merrithew methodology of Pilates requires a more profound and educated level of exercises that actually corrects the anatomy and posture of the body. To insure that one can move with out pain in the joints and can actually have a new “way “ to move more freely with strength and endurance in their bodies.

Via, the athlete, who pushes their bodies to amazing levels or the person who has injury or illness and has difficulty in moving with ease and pain free.

pamelas pilates teacher signature tahoe fitness I have had the privileged of working with people from the astute athlete, marathon runners to ski/ snowboarder competitors, Parkinson’s disease. Cancer and Scoliosis.  Hip, knee shoulder surgeries etc. and pre & post natal.

I have worked with people from ages 16 to 89! I truly love what I do, as Pilates has put me back together, I have had 3 knee surgeries, from skiing and have had some other issues. As I was a dancer for 25 years and had some injury from that. I found pilates to do the trick in getting myself back together.

It is my personal opinion; that everybody no matter of age or issue can benefit from doing pilates with us at Pamela’s Pilates.

A good day is had, when someone “get’s it” to connect with their bodies. To watch them find their personal strength in the core muscles. “Much harder than it sounds.” There is allot of  muscles that have to be engaged to make the connection.

Doing pilates correctly takes a lot of perseverance. But can make a life long change. There is a lot of pilates out there. The company that we are certified with is based in Canada as well as the UK and Asia. The level of Pilates that they teach continues to the  Physical therapist level. Their standards are high, to ensure each instructor, knows how to execute and teach Pilates in a manner of excellence, creativity, safety and intuitive methodology for each individual.

I feel quite privileged to be a part of the Tahoe Experience.

A little about me.  My husband and I moved to South Lake Tahoe from Southern California in 1988. We bought our home that we still live in, had 2 children that have grown up here. Our oldest, a daughter graduated from Mills College, with a BA in Art History and a minor in dance. She worked at Markus Ashley gallery when she was home on her college breaks. Her dance came from Rose Marie Ottman, as she has continued to dance in a small troupe in the Bay area.

Our son, who is currently at Chapman College, played on the travel hockey team and football at the High school and has continued to play football in college.

We, as a family were very involved with the “Lake Tahoe Wildlife care,” and my husband is currently the Vice President on their board of directors. I mention all this as to show we are a “very Tahoe “ family. I started my career when the kids were in high school, I knew my “Mom” job was coming to an end and then it was my turn to find my next passion.

I was never one who loved the gym but skied and wound-up with a few knee surgeries as a result of. It was my so rehabilitation that led me to pilates. I had been a dancer in my younger years, and loved the challenge and the ability to move with fluidity and strength. I found pilates to be the perfect connection between dance and athletic ability.

When I decided pilates was my passion, I researched to find the best possible company to obtain my teacher training. The Stott/Merrithew Company is based out of Canada, as the founders were both dancers and had created a pilates company that entailed the basic teachings from Joseph Pilates, as well as physicians, physical therapists and others in the field of the human anatomy. Stott/Merrithew is now a worldwide pilate’s methodology that has perfected and updated the basic work.

I have continued with Stott/Merrithew in my course work as they have provide the most updated research in rehabilitation for injuries as well as challenging exercises for the most astute athlete.

I started out teaching at the college and then opened a small studio, and then upgraded to another larger studio and added equipment. I love doing pilates as much as I love teaching pilates! I am so passionate about it and watching my clients succeed, via recovering from an injury or finding success in their athletic achievements’. I think that everyone can benefit with pilates in their lives.

I am in such gratitude for all my clients, their dedication to allow me to re train their bodies to work with more efficiently, strength and flexibility. Thus, feeling better in their bodies and their self-esteem.

Casey moved to Tahoe in 2003 after graduating high school to pursue her dream of living an active life in the mountains. She fell in love with snowboarding and started competing in the Kirkwood Extreme Competition. She was fortunate enough to spend 2011-2014 competing in various competition tours all over the world. Most dear to her is living an active and healthy lifestyle right here in Lake Tahoe: Mountain Biking, Skiing, Swimming, SUP Boarding and more.     We hosted a Grand Expansion/Re-Opening Party in January 2014 welcoming new Stott Pilates instructor – Jordyn King. We also celebrated the addition of our new Studio B with more equipment.

    Joseph H. Pilates

    Here’s a brief summary of what everyone is talking about. Joseph H. Pilates was born in Germany in 1880; he died in New York in 1967. He developed a fitness regime bearing his name, and successfully used it to overcome his disabilities as a frail and sickly child. Pilates devised a series of controlled movements that engage the mind and body in developing strong, flexible muscles, without building bulk. Emphasis was placed on developing deep torso strength and flexibility known as “centering” ­ to ensure proper posture and reduced risk of injury. The lithe musculature and ease of movement possessed by a cat was an image he used to illustrate the technique’s objectives. The Pilates method places a lot of emphasis on correct posture and technique, and doesn’t rely upon high numbers of repetitive exercises.The pilates method of exercise has been very popular with dancers since the 1940s but it is now becoming much better known. Today his followers include dancers, athletes, physiotherapists, fitness trainers, health care providers and other professionals who appreciate the significant role exercise plays in restoring and maintaining good health.

    STOTT PILATES®
    The progressive approach to Pilates exercise, known as STOTT PILATES®, builds on the essence and principles of the late Joseph H. Pilates’ work by incorporating modern knowledge about the body. President and CEO, Lindsay G. Merrithew, along with Executive Director, Education, Moira Merrithew have spent more than two decades collaborating with a team of physical therapists, sports medicine and exercise professionals refining the Pilates method to include modern principles of exercise science and spinal rehabilitation to result in STOTT PILATES – the contemporary approach to the teachings of Joseph Pilates.

    The STOTT PILATES Method of exercise involves more initial pelvic and shoulder girdle stabilization exercises than were present in the original method. As well, the anatomically-based concepts of “neutral” spine and pelvis are incorporated to help restore the natural curves of the spine  a departure from the original technique and other forms of fitness that incorporate a “pelvic tilt” to flatten the back.

    STOTT PILATES exercises are designed to restore the natural curves of the spine and rebalance the muscles around the joints. This involves placing more emphasis on pelvic and scapular stabilization, and integration of all the parts of the body into one. As well, preparatory exercises and modifications allow the technique to be appropriate for many different body types and abilities, making it applicable to sport-specific training and everyday life.

    One of the safest and most effective exercise programs available, STOTT PILATES® comprises hundreds of exercises, which allow workouts to be customized to meet participants’ individual needs. The neuro-muscular technique tones and lengthens muscles, increases abdominal and back strength, improves posture and body mechanics, reduces joint and lower back stress, balances flexibility with strength, and reduces stress and tension. The smooth, almost dance-like motions and an emphasis on proper breathing leave participants feeling refreshed rather than exhausted.

    Technique is extremely important and even experienced users of the method require a trainer to assist them through their workout. (In our studio, one-on-one instruction is by far the most popular type of workout and one that we recommend highly.).
